Winner of the 3rd Bauerfeind Phlebology Award
- Dr. Christina Jeanneret

Swiss scientist Dr. Christina Jeanneret has been named the winner of the 3rd Bauerfeind  Phlebology Award by the International Union of Phlebology and Bauerfeind AG. With her study design in the field of compression therapy, Dr. Jeanneret, an angiologist, won this prestigious award over other highly qualified experts from Hungary, France, Austria, and Slovenia.

The focus of the study on 60 patients at the Medizinische Universitätsklinik Bruderholz is to determine the influence of compression stockings on the diameter of gastrocnemius veins in vivo (muscle veins in the area of the popliteal fossa) and to examine the hypothesis of whether an increase in the diameter of gastrocnemius veins correlates with strong patient complaints about their legs and how/if the patient’s quality of life is affected. State-of-the-art sonographic investigation methods will be employed using standardized measurements of venous return and all patients will complete surveys regarding quality of life items. In conjunction with the study, various compression stockings are examined for quality and design.

Dr. Christina Jeanneret and her research partner, Dr. Irene von Planta from Basel, will be presented the award and the first instalment of the 20,000 euro prize money at the IUP World Congress to be held next month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The second instalment will be received by the winner if she presents the work accompanying the study design in the forthcoming 18 months.

Bauerfeind AG has very good reasons for promoting competition in the field of compression therapy. As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of compression stockings, Bauerfeind AG depends upon the development of innovative products and systems that not only meet the demands of optimal patient care but also exceed the outcome expectations of the doctor. "This is why it is important for us that scientific findings, such as those in the prize-winning study, are incorporated into product development. We are delighted to be cooperating with such an expert and committed scientist as Dr. Jeanneret“, stated Thomas Bauerfeind, Head of the Phlebology business unit and Member of the Executive board of Bauerfeind AG, following the vote of the jury.

The award selection committee for the 3rd Bauerfeind Phlebology Award was comprised of internationally recognized specialists. Prof. Hugo Partsch from Austria, Past President of IUP and chairman of the jury, Dr. Albert-Adrien Ramelet from Switzerland, IUP Vice President, Prof. H.A. Martino Neumann from the Netherlands, Prof. Christine J. Moffatt from Great Britain, MD Dr. Jorge Ulloa-Dominguez from Colombia, Dr. med. Horst Gerlach from Germany and MD Robert A.
